This is becoming a beast of a business and my word Mr Jay-Z is making sure he gets a head start and runs this town (excuse the pun).
It’s not really clear whether this is a Willow Smith effect or Jay-Z’s Roc Nation is attracting stars like crazy, but pop starlet, Rihanna has announced that she will now be managed by the label.
Rihanna is not the only star to be signed by Roc Nation, aside from Willow Smith, the label also took Melanie Fiona, rapper Wale and DJ/producer Mark Ronson and Tinchy Stryder under the wings of its management team.
Joining Roc Nation isn’t the only step Rihanna took to maintain her existence, she also formed a company called Rihanna Entertainment which will merge all of her businesses including music, film, fragrance, fashion and book ventures.
Although the new deal seems fresh, Rihanna and Jay-Z go a long way back as far as half a decade. The songstress was signed on to Def Jam by Jay-Z who was the president of the company back then, just hours after seeing her audition.
Jay-Z told MTV News in 2005 what he did after meeting Rihanna for the first time.
“We signed her that night — 3 in the morning was when that contract got signed. We wouldn’t let her leave the office. From meeting her at 4 [p.m.] in the office till 3 in the morning, I was absolutely certain. That doesn’t happen too often.”
Rihanna also has nice memories of that first time she met Jay-Z. She said to MTV:
“When we first got there, I was shaking. I had never met a celebrity, and to have to audition for one and meet him at the same time … I was hysterical. But the minute I went in the office, it was totally different. He was so welcoming; the environment was so warm and friendly. The jitters just went away immediately.”
