Music | Is It ‘Roc-A-Fella’ or ‘Rockafella’?

Questonably one of the best Rappers Alive or that has ever existed, Jay-Z is taking over the whole world and rightfully owning whats his.

Jay-Z’s lawyers will probably whip out a set of papers stating that Roc-A-Fella is not a name that can be shared by just anybody. Case in point: Jay-Z vs Terry Miller, British celebrity chef.

The hip hop mogul sued Terry Miller five years ago over the name of the chef’s Newcastle restaurant: Rockafella. Jay-Z claimed that the title would lead to confusion with his Roc-A-Fella Records music empire.

Miller opened his restaurant, Rockafella, with money from his 2006 win on the hit show “Hell’s Kitchen”. The battle has been on ever since. Last year, when a judge ruled in Miller’s favor, he was granted the UK trademark, Rockafella, for his restaurant and food brand name. Jay-Z was then ordered to pay Miller’s legal costs.

Jay-Z and his UK legal team, Forrester Ketley & Co., appealed the case and won, ultimately forbidding Miller from using the “Rockafella” name for his catering business.

However, last Monday, the judge held the previous ruling was incorrect because Jay-Z’s entertainment businesses were not entirely separate from the catering trade. Jay-Z fully won the legal battle at last.

The restaurant in question has since closed down in 2009
